García Márquez wanted to be a musician?
The Colombian author dreamed of going from fair to fair and singing with an accordion, which he thought was “the oldest and happiest way to tell a story,” according to his memoirs.
He reportedly had a passion of a popular folk music genre from Colombia called vallenato, and described one of this most famous novels, ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ as “a Vallenato of 400 pages”. One of the characters in the book – Francisco el hombre – is allegedly inspired by an old legend as well as Gabriel García Márquez’s friend Rafael Escalona, who was one of the most important composers of vallenato music. Escalona is said to have remarked that Gabriel García Márquez was one of the best singers he had ever met!
